Combing Baleen

Combing Baleen

With interest of whales in the Thursday morning group, Chelsey planned an activity to show how Whales eat krill using their baleen.  Here you can see Bauer and Bailie using their combs as baleen to catch the red krill.  On the Smart Board, they also were able to compare the whales weight to humans, planes, buses, elephants, tanks and a dinosaurs.

Fishing for Trash

Fishing for Trash

Chelsey planned a fishing activity for the children.  Each child used a magnetic fishing pole to catch fish.  On one side of the fish was a picture of a recyclable or compostable item.  The children talked about the picture on the back and sorted the item into the correct recycling bin.  Trevin and Leona show their fish they caught, while Gavin and Gunnar sort their recyclables.

Marble Painting Planet Earth

Marble Painting Planet Earth

This week we talked about keeping our planet healthy and happy.  This activity consisted of using marbles in a box to paint a circle the cut out to represent the earth.  The children added a heart they cut out to help them remember to help keep their planet healthy by recycling, picking up litter, turning lights out when they are not in the room, running water only when it is needed, etc.  Below, Andrew and Amarii marble paint.

Rabbit in a Hole

Rabbit in a Hole

Chelsey taught the kids what it is like to be a rabbit in the wild.  She used a parachute to have the children re-enact movements that a rabbit would do (stretching, hopping, hiding under a bush, and hopping away from prey in a zig-zag pattern.  Here you can see Carson , Amarii and Hudson taking their turn with the parachute.

Marbled Eggs

Marbled Eggs

The children explored with shaving cream.  When they were ready to add color, they washed their hands and then came back to pick out 3 different colors of liquid water color and made large circles.  Heidi then placed their egg shape, that they cut out,  on top of the colors and scraped off the shaving cream off the paper with a scraper.  The end result was a colorful marbled Easter egg.  Kadynce, Hudson and Trevin explore the shaving cream.

Planting for the School Garden

Planting for the School Garden

The Thursday morning class had some high school helpers come in to help plant tomato seeds for the school garden.  Each child was able to plant seeds into a small dirt wafer which we will watch grow in the classroom.  Once the weather is warm enough, they will be transplanted into the school garden to be used for the summer lunch program and for lunches in the fall.
